Most Indians default to a domestic trip on a 3-4 day weekend because international travel sounds like it needs a week. It doesn't — not if you pick the right destination. Colombo is 2 hours from Mumbai. Kathmandu is 2 hours from Delhi. Dubai, Bangkok, and Phuket are all under 5 hours from most Indian metros. That's a flight time you'd tolerate for a Goa trip, except you land in a different country.

We already mapped every 2026 leave bridge and long weekend in the India Leave Calendar 2026 — that post tells you when you're off. This one tells you where to go with that time, picking destinations that genuinely fit the days available, not aspirational ones that need an extra two days of travel just to get there.

How We Matched Destinations to Each Weekend

The rule is simple: total time off (including the weekend) minus flight time and immigration buffer should still leave you 2+ full days at the destination. A 3-day weekend with a 6-hour flight each way burns a full day just travelling — that rules out Europe, the UK, and the US for anything short of the Diwali mega-window. It does not rule out Sri Lanka, Nepal, the UAE, Thailand, or Singapore.

Bangkok, Thailand

January 24 – Feb 1 (Republic Day bridge)

9 days, 4 leaves. Flight time ~4 hrs from DEL/BOM/BLR. January is shoulder season — good weather, lower fares. Even using only the Sat-Sun-Mon natural long weekend (Jan 24-26) without extra leave, a 3-day Bangkok trip is genuinely workable.

Dubai, UAE

March 5–8 (Holi long weekend)

Holi falls Wednesday March 4; taking March 5-6 off gives a 5-day break (Mar 1 Sun to Mar 8 Sun depending on your week). Flight time 3-3.5 hrs from DEL/BOM/BLR/HYD. March weather in Dubai is comfortable (25-32°C) before summer heat sets in.

Colombo, Sri Lanka

April 3–6 (Good Friday + Ram Navami)

Good Friday April 3 (Fri) bridges into Ram Navami April 6 (Mon) — a 4-day weekend with zero or one day of leave depending on your employer. Flight time just 2-2.5 hrs from BOM/MAA/COK. Shortest flight on this entire list.

Singapore

October 19–23 (Dussehra bridge)

5 days, 3 leaves. Best from BLR, MAA, or HYD where flight time is 4-4.5 hrs (DEL is closer to 5h45m nonstop). October is shoulder season in Singapore — lower fares, fewer crowds than the Dec-Jan rush.

Phuket, Thailand

November 6–10 (early Diwali window)

Using the first 5 days of the Diwali mega-window (full window runs to Nov 22) for a beach trip instead of a long-haul trip. Flight time ~4.5-5 hrs from DEL/BOM. Phuket in early November is just past monsoon — good swimming conditions, fares not yet at full Diwali peak.

Kathmandu, Nepal

December 25 – 28 (Christmas long weekend)

Christmas Friday Dec 25 plus a weekend gives 3-4 days without any leave at all. Flight time just 2 hrs from DEL — the fastest international option on this list after Colombo. Kathmandu in December is cold but clear, good mountain visibility.

2026's Short-Haul-Friendly Windows

1

January 24 – February 1 (Republic Day)

Republic Day, January 26, is a Monday — a natural Sat-Sun-Mon long weekend with zero leave required. Adding 4 paid leaves (Jan 27-30) stretches it to 9 days. For just the natural 3-day version, Bangkok or Colombo both fit comfortably with a Friday-night-out, Monday-night-back flight pattern.

2

March 4–8 (Holi)

Holi is Wednesday, March 4. Taking March 5-6 off (Thu-Fri) bridges into the weekend for a 5-day break. Dubai's March weather is the best argument here — pleasant temperatures before the summer heat most of the Gulf gets from May onward.

3

April 3–6 (Good Friday + Ram Navami)

Good Friday is April 3 (Friday). Ram Navami is April 6 (Monday). That's a 4-day weekend (Fri-Sat-Sun-Mon) with zero leave needed if your employer observes both. Sri Lanka in April has good weather on the west coast — this is the shortest flight on the list, making it the easiest 4-day international trip of the year.

4

October 19–23 (Dussehra)

Dussehra is October 20 (Tuesday). Taking October 19 and 21-23 off (3 leaves) bridges into a 5-day window from the prior weekend through the following Friday. Singapore is shoulder season here — better value than the Nov-Dec rush.

5

November 6–22 (Diwali mega-window)

The longest window of the year at 17 days using 6 leaves — usually earmarked for Europe in the leave calendar guide. If you'd rather do something shorter and cheaper, the first 4-5 days of this window (Nov 6-10) work well for Phuket or the Maldives before the window's later half gets used for the longer-haul trip.

6

December 25–28 (Christmas)

Christmas is Friday, December 25. The following weekend gives a natural 3-4 day break with no leave required if you stop before New Year prices spike. Kathmandu's short flight time means you lose almost no time to travel — useful when you don't want to burn extra leave right before the bigger Dec 25-Jan 1 window covered in the leave calendar guide.

Festival dates can shift

Some of these bridges depend on your employer observing both ends (Holi and Good Friday, Dussehra timing) — confirm your company's actual 2026 holiday list before booking non-refundable flights. The leave calendar guide has the full caveat list on state and private-sector variation.

What Fits in 2 Days vs. What Needs 4

Flight time is the real constraint, not destination popularity. Here's the honest split.

2-day weekend (Sat-Sun, no leave)

  • ·Colombo — 2-2.5 hrs flight, doable as a true 48-hour trip from BOM/MAA/COK
  • ·Kathmandu — 2 hrs flight from DEL, same logic applies
  • ·Dubai — 3-3.5 hrs flight; tight but workable if you take late-night flights both ways
  • ·Anything beyond 4 hrs flight time eats too much of a 2-day window — you'd spend one full day just travelling

4-day long weekend (1-3 leaves)

  • Bangkok — 4 hrs flight, comfortable with 2.5-3 full days at destination
  • Phuket — 4.5-5 hrs flight, best with at least 4 days total
  • Singapore — 4-4.5 hrs from southern metros (BLR/MAA/HYD), 5h45m from DEL nonstop
  • Maldives — 3-4 hrs depending on origin and connection; resort transfers add 1-3 hrs so build in buffer

💡 Check prices before you commit to a date

Fares on these short-haul routes swing 20-40% depending on how far out you book and whether a deal happens to be live. Check current deals before locking in your Holi or Dussehra weekend dates — Wingit scans all of these routes from 8 Indian metros three times a day.

Mistakes People Make Planning a Short International Trip

5 Mistakes That Turn a Long Weekend Into a Travel Day

1

Picking a destination by popularity, not flight time

Singapore and Europe show up on every 'best places to visit' list, but a 5h45m nonstop from Delhi to Singapore eats half a 3-day weekend in transit alone. For a true long weekend, flight time under 4-4.5 hrs each way should be the first filter, not the last.

2

Booking a redeye out but a midday flight back

The whole point of a short trip is maximising hours on the ground. Fly out on the latest flight that lands before midnight at the destination, and fly back on the latest flight that still gets you to work the next morning. A midday return flight on the last day wastes half of it at the airport.

3

Forgetting visa lead time for a last-minute booking

Dubai needs a UAE tourist visa arranged 3-5 working days ahead for most Indians (see the Dubai budget guide for the full breakdown). Sri Lanka and Thailand both offer visa-on-arrival or easy e-visas for Indians, making them better last-minute options if you're booking inside a week.

4

Not accounting for immigration and transfer time at both ends

A 2-hour flight to Colombo or Kathmandu can still cost you 4-5 hours door-to-door once you add airport arrival buffer, immigration queues, and transfers. Budget realistically or your '2-day trip' becomes one full day of just travelling.

5

Booking the same week everyone else does

Holi, Dussehra, and Christmas weekends see a spike in demand on every route in this list — prices on Bangkok, Dubai, and Phuket routes can run 20-30% higher in the two weeks before these dates versus booking 6-8 weeks out. Earlier booking or a flexible day either side of the holiday usually saves the most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Colombo, Sri Lanka is the shortest at roughly 2-2.5 hours from Mumbai, Chennai, or Kochi. Kathmandu, Nepal is similarly short at about 2 hours from Delhi. Both make a genuine 2-day weekend trip (Saturday-Sunday, no leave needed) realistic, unlike longer-haul options where travel time eats most of the weekend.

Yes, if you pick a destination under 4 hours flight time. Colombo, Kathmandu, and Dubai all work on a natural long weekend (Friday night out, Monday night back) without needing extra leave, as long as the holiday itself falls on a Friday or Monday. Bangkok and Phuket need at least one extra leave day to feel comfortable rather than rushed.

Mumbai, Chennai, and Kochi have the shortest flights to Colombo (2-2.5 hrs). Delhi has the shortest flight to Kathmandu (2 hrs) and is well-connected to Dubai and Bangkok. Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad have notably shorter flight times to Singapore (4-4.5 hrs) than Delhi (5h45m nonstop), making the south better positioned for that particular route.

6-8 weeks ahead for routes like Bangkok, Dubai, Phuket, and Singapore during normal periods. For holiday-adjacent weekends (Holi, Dussehra, Christmas) where demand spikes across all Indian travellers at once, book by 8-10 weeks out or watch for a deal that beats the rising trend.

Sri Lanka offers a free ETA for Indians. Thailand offers visa-on-arrival or an e-visa depending on entry point. Nepal requires no visa for Indian nationals at all. The Maldives offers a free 30-day visa on arrival. Dubai (UAE) is the exception — most Indians need a pre-arranged tourist visa taking 3-5 working days; see the Dubai budget guide for the full breakdown.

Kathmandu and Colombo typically have the lowest return fares on this list, often Rs. 10,000-18,000 outside peak periods, helped by short flight times and high flight frequency. Dubai, Bangkok, and Phuket run Rs. 16,000-28,000 return depending on season. Singapore and the Maldives tend to run higher, often Rs. 20,000-35,000+ return, due to longer distance and less fare competition on some routes.
